The area and things to do
The landscape of this area of France is
distinctly southern and rural. Architectural cypress trees intersect
the skyline and during the summer months the fields of sunflowers
stand out against a backdrop of rolling forested hillsides. From
October to May the towering snow-capped Pyrenees to the south are
quite simply breathtaking.
the beach at Lac Montbel
Once known as Occitania, the region is steeped
in history. The ruins of Cathar Castles adorn craggy peaks and nearby,
Rennes le Château tempts the visitor to solve its mystery.
Walkers and cyclists will find numerous picturesque routes to tackle
and anyone keen on water sports will enjoy the local 600-hectare
stretch of water known as Lac Montbel. Wine enthusiasts can explore
the vineyards of the Corbière and Malepère regions.
The incredible La Cité at Carcassonne is only a 40-minute
drive away and the Mediterranean beaches can be reached in 1hour
15 minutes. During the winter months the family-friendly ski station
of Mont d’Olmes can be reached within 45 minutes and the larger
ski Domaine of Ax-les Thermes in just over 1 hour.
